What is Clomid?

Clomid, the brand name version of the drug clomiphene citrate, is an oral medication prescribed to promote ovulation or to make it occur more regularly. If you have been diagnosed with ovulatory dysfunction and/or polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and have been unable to conceive naturally, then you may be prescribed Clomid by your GP or gynecologist. Manufactured by Sanofi-Aventis US LLC, a pharmaceutical company founded in 1950 and located in Bridgewater, New Jersey, Clomid is available as oral tablets, each containing 50 mg of clomiphene citrate USP and several other inactive ingredients such as lactose, sucrose, cornstarch, and magnesium stearate.

Clomid works by inducing ovulation and therefore increasing the chances of getting pregnant. Its mechanism of action put in simple words is the following: it tricks the brain into thinking that estrogen levels are lower than they are, which makes the pituitary gland start to produce larger amounts of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), and luteinizing hormone (LH). Higher levels of FSH stimulate the ovary to produce one or multiple egg follicles, that will develop and be released during the process of ovulation. High levels of LH stimulate ovulation, and more eggs released from the ovaries means more opportunities for a sperm to reach one.

Clomid is normally taken for 5 consequent days shortly after the beginning of the menstrual cycle. Doctors normally prescribe one, two, three, or sometimes four pills to be taken at the same time each day, depending on how they think the patient will respond to the treatment. It’s common to start at the lowest dose and increase as needed. It is recommended that Clomid is taken at or around the same time daily. Most patients prefer taking it before going to bed as it allows them to sleep through some of the unwanted side effects. If you don’t become pregnant after three to six cycles of Clomid, it may be time to see a fertility specialist and move on to a more aggressive treatment.

Clomid Side Effects

While this medication is generally safe, there are some side effects that you should be aware of. Common side effects include abdominal discomfort, nausea and vomiting, breast tenderness, mood changes, headaches, dizziness, and visual changes like blurring and double vision.

Although extremely rare, allergic reactions may also occur. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include rashes, swelling of the face, lips, throat, or tongue, and difficulty swallowing or breathing.

Severe side effects of Clomid include ovarian hyper-stimulation – a syndrome characterized by enlargement of the ovaries. If, after taking Clomid, you start feeling unwell, experience breathlessness or are getting visual disturbances, stop the treatment, and seek immediate medical help.

Clomid use is also associated with a slightly higher risk of multiple pregnancies. The rate is around 7 percent for twins, and 0.5 percent for triplets or higher order multiples. You should consult your doctor about this risk and whether you are able to carry twins or other multiples.

Where Can I Buy Clomid?
