What is Addyi?

Addyi, also known under its generic name of flibanserin, is a medication approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder (HSDD) in premenopausal women. This is the most common type of female sexual dysfunction that affects nearly 6 million women in the United States. Addyi is a non-hormonal, Multifunctional Serotonin Agonist Antagonist (MSAA), and it works by correcting an imbalance of the neurotransmitters (brain chemicals) dopamine and norepinephrine, both responsible for sexual excitement, while at the same time decreasing the levels of serotonin (which can lower sex drive). The precise way in which these interactions boost sexual desire in women is not yet fully comprehended. Originally developed as an antidepressant, Addyi was approved for the treatment of HSDD in 2015.

Addyi should not be considered the "female Viagra." Viagra works by increasing blood flow to the genitals in order to enhance sexual performance. Addyi affects brain chemicals and does not enhance sexual performance. Addyi is not recommended to those experiencing low sex drive due to a co-existing medical or psychiatric condition (depression, for example), those who have problems with a significant other (husband or partner) or if it is due to the side effects of another medication. Patients have reported it taking up to four weeks to start achieving noticeable results. The full results are, however, usually observed between eight to twelve weeks after the beginning of the treatment. If after this period the patient doesn’t notice any improvement, the treatment should be stopped.

Addyi is manufactured by Sprout Pharmaceuticals and is available as 100 mg pink, oval tablets with a “f100” inscription engraved on one side. Each bottle of Addyi contains 30 pills. The recommended dosage of Addyi is 100 mg taken once a day at bedtime.

Addyi Side Effects

Common side effects include dizziness, nausea, dry mouth, tiredness, and difficulty falling asleep or remaining asleep. The risk of loss of consciousness, particularly when combined with alcohol or grapefruit, is also a concern. Patients should not drink alcohol close to the time of taking the Addyi dose because it may increase the risk of severe low blood pressure and fainting. Addyi is taken daily at bedtime with the recommended dose totaling 100mg. It's important to follow the instructions and take the pill just before bed, to decrease the risk of injury due to low blood pressure, sleepiness, and fainting.

IMPORTANT: signs of a severe allergic reaction to flibanserin require immediate medical help. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include difficulty breathing, rashes, itching, dizziness, swelling of the face, lips, throat, or tongue, and trouble breathing or swallowing.
