Compounding Information

Pharmacy compounding generally involves combining, mixing, or altering drug ingredients to prepare a medication for a particular need under applicable pharmacy and medical frameworks. Compounding may be considered in situations where an appropriate FDA-approved product does not meet a patient’s specific medical need.

Compounded drugs and FDA approval

Compounded drugs are not FDA-approved in the same way as commercially approved drug products. FDA does not review compounded drugs for safety, effectiveness, or quality before they are marketed. Compounding therefore should not be treated as automatically equivalent to, or preferable to, an FDA-approved product.

Compounding is product- and patient-specific

Not every medication can or should be compounded, and a general website page cannot determine whether a compounded preparation is appropriate for an individual patient. The relevant prescription, formulation need, available FDA-approved products, and applicable requirements all matter.

If a prescriber has identified a formulation-related need, a pharmacy can be asked whether that type of compounding is within its current capabilities and what prescription information is required.
